TIPS TO PREPARE

  • Get rid of sources of standing water (for example, tires, gutters, buckets, barrels) to reduce places where mosquitoes lay eggs.
  • Provide workers with, and encourage them to wear, clothing that covers theirs hands, arms, legs and other exposed skin. Consider providing hats with mosquito netting to protect the face and neck.
  • Use EPA-registered insect repellents. If you are also using sunscreen, apply sunscreen before applying insect repellent.
  • Use Permethrin, an EPA-registered insect repellent that can be applied to clothing. When using Permethrin always follow label instructions.
  • Thin out and trim vegetation, as tall grasses and unkempt landscaping can attract mosquitoes.

  • Use larvicides where mosquitoes lay eggs to help reduce the number of mosquitoes in an area. Use adulticide coils, foggers, sprays and aerosols where mosquitoes rest - under plants, in dense brush or tall grasses and the underside of leaves on trees and bushes.
  • Keep doors closed as often as possible and install air curtains to create a positive air flow that blows mosquitoes out the door when they try to fly inside.
  • Use screens on windows and doors. Repair holes in screens to keep mosquitoes outdoors. Close any gaps to eliminate entry points. Use air conditioning, if available.
  • Make sure water is circulating in fountains, ponds and swimming pools.
